In need of a day like today

I’ve been struggling a bit lately. With the odd work schedule, I’ve been getting the training sessions in, but it hasn’t been easy. I’ve also been flirting with getting sick and just barely avoiding it. Last week, having finished my project the previous week I had the ability and the need to take a few days off to go play in the snow with some old friends. It was great mental vacation and I feel like I’m in a much healthier place mentally for it. I see it as well worth the few workouts I had to skip, including my long Saturday ride which I missed to due to a fun combination of snow, and lack of motivation to get on the trainer.

There was no skipping today and I hit all 3 sports with the team and loved every painful second. Since I got there 30 mins early, I had some time to focus on swimming in a lane by myself and get mentally checked in. We spent the morning doing mostly long intervals and finished with a few relay races clocking in a total of 4,000 yds. Next up was EK’s spin class. It was my first time, and boy did it not disappoint. 90 mins of hammering away at whatever sets Eric came up with. A quick stop at wardrobe and it was on to the treadmill for a 40 min run which consisted of mostly Z2 running. I say mostly because the non-Z2 time was spent running at “the pace where my running form starts to breakdown”. For me that was at about 10.5 – 11 mph. In a nutshell, 5 mins Z2, 45s sprint, repeat.

The craziest part of the day was that I weighed in when I got to the gym and after the run and I managed to sweat out 6 lbs while I was there. At least no one can say I wasn’t hydrated… I added a few lbs back in with a nice team lunch at Whole Foods afterwards and I jetted home so Hollie could head out and get her 6.5 mile run done.

There are good Sundays and there are great ones. This was definitely the one I have been needing.
